Roger Schmitt founds the company SMES (High-precision mechanics, maintenance and related services) in Brunstatt. At 26, he is the youngest company manager in the mechanical field in Alsace.
The company grows bigger and builds new premises in Wittelsheim, among which a brand-new 500 sqm workshop.
The company buys its first CNC machines.
Thanks to a surge in orders, the number of collaborators increases four-fold in six months.

SMES manufactures and installs structural parts aiming at securing the elevators in the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
In collaboration with one of its customers, the company designs and manufactures the machines used to print the holograms on the new European and Chinese banknotes.

SMES obtains the ISO 9001 certification, demonstrating high-quality standards. Following a thorough continuous improvement process, the company positions itself as a major supplier of the aeronautical and aerospace industry thanks to its EN 9100 certification.
Attentive to the well-being of its collaborators, SMES adds spacious rest areas and a new user-friendly high-tech meeting room to its existing premises.
SMES invests in its first 3D programming licenses and trains its staff in CAM / CAD techniques.
The company acquires an ERP software program to optimize the management of its production means and resources so that it is more reactive to its customers’ expectations than ever before.
